Generally speaking, the mentality in the fitness industry is go-hard or go home. To always ‘push.’ You have heard statements like, ‘Who ever felt bad after a hard workout…’ ‘…No one regrets a workout…’ The list goes on. Issue is, these statements do not consider when someone IS in fact chronically burned out and has little capacity for anything, let alone taking on the stress and recovery load of super-intense workouts.

It’s all about the nervous system

And if you ARE pushing too hard with fitness during this time, you are probably sending your nervous system into overdrive even more than it already is, which won’t do your overall burnout recovery any favours.

We have our sympathetic (fight or flight) and our parasympathetic (rest and digest) nervous systems. If you are burned out you have likely been aon a nearly empty tank for some time, where your sympathetic nervous system has certainly been ticking over.
